GUIDE FOR VISITA IGLESIA AND ALAY LAKAD NEAR UMA

Alay Lakad and Visita Iglesia are both significant religious activities observed by Filipino Catholics during Holy Week. Alay Lakad, which means to “walk offering” in English, involves a pilgrimage or procession usually done on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday as an act of penance, thanksgiving, or petition. Visita Iglesia, on the other hand, translates to “church visit” and is a tradition of visiting seven churches, each representing one of the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

If you’re staying near UMA Hotel and wish to participate in these traditions, here’s a guide to help you navigate the experience:

  • Research Local Churches: Before embarking on your Visita Iglesia, research nearby churches. Uma Hotel staff or online resources can provide information about Catholic churches in the vicinity. Identify at least seven churches you’d like to visit.
  • Plan Your Route: Once you’ve identified the churches, plan your route. Consider factors such as distance, transportation options, and the order of visitation. It’s advisable to start early in the day to allow ample time for prayer and reflection at each church.
  • Attend Church Services: Check the schedule of church services for Holy Week. Many churches hold special Masses and liturgies during this time, particularly on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Attend these services to fully immerse yourself in the spirit of the season.
  • Practice Alay Lakad: If you wish to participate in Alay Lakad, coordinate with local parishioners or religious groups organizing the procession. Alay Lakad routes vary by location, so inquire about the starting point and time of departure. Remember to dress modestly and wear comfortable shoes for walking.
  • Respect Local Customs: While participating in Alay Lakad and Visita Iglesia, observe proper decorum and respect local customs. Maintain a reverent demeanor inside the churches, refrain from loud conversations or distractions, and follow any instructions given by church personnel.
  • Engage in Prayer and Reflection: Use this time for personal prayer and reflection. Meditate on the Stations of the Cross, the Seven Last Words of Jesus, or other devotions associated with Holy Week. Take advantage of the quiet, sacred atmosphere of the churches to deepen your spiritual experience.
  • Support Local Communities: Holy Week is an important time for local communities, and many rely on donations from visitors to sustain their churches and ministries. Consider making a donation at each church you visit to support their work and upkeep.
  • Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about any updates or changes to schedules, routes, or local regulations regarding Holy Week observances. Stay connected with Uma Hotel staff or local authorities for any advisories or recommendations.
  • Safety Precautions: Be mindful of safety precautions, especially if participating in Alay Lakad or traveling between churches. Stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, and be cautious of traffic if walking outdoors.
  • Reflect on the Experience: After completing your Visita Iglesia and participating in Alay Lakad, take time to reflect on your experience. Consider the insights gained, the prayers offered, and the spiritual journey undertaken during Holy Week.
